Since my teenage years, I have always been service oriented. While in high school, I volunteered at the State Mental Institution. I joined the Army Reserves on the delayed entry program while I was still in high school then joined the Regular Army to serve our country, While in the Army, I was always looking for and getting into "service" positions such as NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) decontamination teams, CDAC (Community Drug and Alcohol Center {ironically, I later became an alcoholic and drug addict}), and in Germany I was a NEO NCO (Non-combatant Evacuation Operations). While with the 2nd Infantry Training Brigade at Ft Benning, I volunteered as a peer educator helping fellow instructors master their skills. When I was discharged and settled in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, I became a volunteer firefighter for the city. One of the childhood dreams that addiction and alcoholism took away from me - getting a college degree - was given back to me in recovery. Attending the UW Center in Marinette, WI, I became involved with student government and graduated as the president. Attending UW Oshkosh, my service involvements included peer educating, CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management team) and students in recovery mentoring.

Today, my primary public service is as a ham radio operator. Ham (amateur) Radio is a high powered radio that requires a FCC license (Federal Communications Commission) and is often used for supplemental (and sometimes primary) communications in times of disaster or civil emergency. I am a volunteer mobile storm spotter for the National Weather Service through Amateur Radio Emergency Services. I also do a lot of communications support for public events such as marathons, triathlons, and walks. Read all about my ham radio side at W9SBU
